To develop a writing instrument that is not a fountain pen - this was the deliberately open-ended task set by Dr Lamy when he first commissioned Franco Clivio towards the end of the 1990s. At that time, he already had a considerable collection of everyday objects that fascinated him because of their functionality and technical sophistication. Today, his collection of different objects travels through various international museums under the name 'No Name Design'.
One of these finds, which he spots at flea markets, junk shops and hardware shops, becomes the motivator of the LAMY pico: a good 100-year-old writing instrument that can be extended to its full length by moving backwards and forwards. However, while the mechanism of this archetype is rather tricky and requires the use of both hands, Clivio, in collaboration with Lamy, develops a ballpoint pen in a pocket-size that expands from small to large almost silently when pressed gently." I think the result is not just a ballpoint pen, but an object that feels like a piece of jewellery in the hand" (PB).
